70+ Local Organizations Send Letter to the Mayor of NYC

March 1, 2017 – As New York City moves forward with implementation of historic Raise the Age legislation, over 70 local organizations, including service providers, grassroots, legal, and advocacy organizations, sent a letter to Mayor de Blasio calling on him to halt the plan to staff juvenile detention facilities with Department of Correction (DOC) Officers from Rikers Island and other NYC jails.

Warning that assigning DOC staff to supervise juvenile detention facilities risks importing the culture of Rikers Island to facilities housing teenagers as young as 13, the organizations expressed their willingness to work with the administration to find alternatives.
