This Mother’s Day, Stand with Mothers for the Sake of All NY Youth

On Tuesday, May 10, the Raise the Age New York campaign is hosting a Mother’s Lobby Day that will bring mothers, grandmothers and other concerned family members to Albany to meet with legislators. They will share the ways in which their children’s and grandchildren’s lives have been forever changed by experiences they had as teenagers in the adult criminal justice system. That’s because in our state, every 16- and 17-year-old who is arrested is automatically charged as an adult—no matter what the offense. For these teens, there is no requirement to notify parents, and no option for family court. It also means that too many young people end up in adult jails and prisons, even for minor crimes.

RTA_mothersday1Carol Bryant’s grandson was arrested at 16 for stealing Chinese food from a delivery car. He ended up in an adult state prison, where he was brutally attacked. She shared her story in May 4 op-ed in the Syracuse Post-Standard.

This policy not only hurts kids and families, it has been shown to actually reduce public safety and cost taxpayer money. (Check out two other recent pieces in Crain’s New York Business and in the Times Union.)

We can fix this. The legislature can pass comprehensive legislation to raise the age of criminal responsibility. Even if you can’t be there, you can show your support by taking action right here and by sharing some of the images and Tweets below with your networks and friends.

Let’s stand with mothers across the state and urge our elected officials to act for all young people and #RaisetheAgeNY.

Below you’ll find shareable images as well as videos with stories.  For more, please check out Facing Time: Facing Future, a collection of portraits, videos, and stories from the Correctional Association of New York that highlight the experiences of those most directly impacted by New York’s practice of prosecuting children as adults.

  • No #mother should lose their child to the #juvenilejustice system when healthier supports are an option. #RaiseTheAgeNY
  • I stand with #NYmoms: It’s time to raise the age for safer communities & more effective outcomes for our kids #RaiseTheAgeNY
